Sample Management:
What is the process of Sample Management?
Sample management is a critical part of the product development process in fashion design. It involves overseeing the creation, review, and approval of samples—physical prototypes of a garment—before it moves to full-scale production. Effective sample management ensures that the final product matches the designer's vision and meets quality standards. Here's an overview of the key steps involved:
1. Design Finalization
· Concept Approval:Before creating a sample, the design team finalizes the concept, ensuring it includes all relevant details, such as fabric, trims, color ways, and construction methods.
· Tech Pack Creation:A tech pack is completed with all necessary specifications (patterns, materials, sizes, trims, etc.) to guide the sample development.
2. Sampling Request
- Sample Order: Once the tech pack is ready, the sample maker or manufacturer receives a sample request, often accompanied by the tech pack, fabrics, trims, and other components needed to build the sample.
- Material & Trim Sourcing: Ensuring that all required materials, including fabrics and trims, are sourced and available for use in the sample creation process.
3. Sample Creation
- Proto-Sample: The first sample, often referred to as a prototype or initial sample, is created based on the design and tech pack specifications. This sample is used to evaluate the fit, construction, and fabric.
- Fit Sample: After the proto-sample, a fit sample is made for review and fitting. This helps to ensure that the garment fits the intended shape and size specifications.
- Development Sample: Once the fit sample is approved, a development sample is created, incorporating any changes or refinements to the initial proto-sample.
4. Sample Review and Feedback
- Internal Reviews: The design team, technical team, and other stakeholders (such as merchandisers, production managers) review the samples to ensure they align with the brand's vision, quality standards, and budget.
- Fit Testing: The fit sample is worn by a model (or mannequin) to ensure it fits well in the intended sizes. Adjustments may be made to patterns and construction based on feedback.
- Quality Control Checks: The sample is inspected for fabric quality, stitching, trims, and overall construction. Any defects or issues are noted for correction.
